Road master who's main objective is to ensure safe road conditions on roads has to have a good overview on real-time weather and traffic conditions on the road network. Information is collected during road supervision runs, also using help from car drivers and colleagues, in exceptional cases from police and rescue authorities as well. To improve the quality of road maintenance works there is a road weather information system (RWIS) available since 1995. Estonian RWIS today comprises of 60 road weather stations, 43 road cameras and 4 VMS signs.
Road weather stations measure air and road surface temperature, air humidity, amount and type of precipitation, wind speed and direction and other parameters right next to a runway. Half of our stations measure amount of salt on road pavement, visibility up to 2 kilometers and also give information about road status. Data from the stations is collected in 10-minute intervals and is momentarily available to road masters and road users on the internet on different webpages. In 2011 around 20 000 EUR was invested in new internet-based communication solution for all road weather stations.
Road users can find information on road and traffic conditions in many ways, for example listening to radio, visiting different webpages on the internet like Road Administration's webpage or calling to Road Information Center.
Estonian Road Administration in good cooperation with Road Administrations from Finland, Latvia and Lithuania is providing it's RWIS data to an international project called Balticroads which has a webpage www.balticroads.net. On that webpage everyone can look at the latest information from road weather stations and road cameras from all countries participating in the project.
