What to keep in mind when driving in winter?

15. November 2017 - 10:32

When driving on Estonian roads, please take into consideration the wintery road conditions that may change rapidly and choose the appropriate speed. You are not obligated to keep to the maximum speed limit.

The use of snow tires is mandatory in Estonia from 1 December to 1 March. During this period, the use of both studless and studded tires is allowed.

It is important that your vehicle is in good technical condition and has been prepared for the winter season. Please ensure that the brakes, lights and windscreen wipers are in working order before embarking on your journey.

Wintery slippery roads should be considered a normal phenomenon and even more attention should be paid than usual when driving. Please also consider other road users and maintenance vehicles. When driving in difficult road conditions, please keep in mind more time is needed to make it to your destination on time.

Winter maintenance of the Estonian road network is conducted on common principles. In order to ensure maximum road safety in wintery conditions, rational and reasonable road maintenance based on traffic volume is provided. Read more.
